1 状況開始, literally "situation" + "start", is a fairly cliched phrase in Japanese media about the military, and is something said at the beginning of any sort of military... situation. (Cecile frequently uses an offshoot of it, "operation start", before the Lancelot joins the fray in R1, to refer to their small piece of the action.) ↩
2 This real-life acronym stands for Radar Data Processing. The RDP system detects and tracks aircraft in-flight. ↩
3 Similarly, a real-life acronym that stands for Traffic Collision Avoidance System, also known as an Aiborne Collision Avoidance System (ACAS). TCAS/ACAS in an on-board system that monitors the airspace around a given plane, warning pilots of the presence of other transponder-equipped aircraft. It's no substitute for air traffic control towers, as not all planes have transponders and transponders can also fail (just like any other system or part), but it would help here, were it working. ↩
4 Fun fact: In the first season, Toudou was addressed as 中佐 (lieutenant colonel (army/airforce/marines)); in R2, as 将軍 (general (generic term, not specific to any one branch of the military)). In many ways, 指令 (captain) is a demotion, but it would probably be wrong to think of it that way, since this word for captain is a civilian term — used by, for example, fire departments, where a captain is the rank between "chief" and "lieutenant". ↩
5 The first of several things Suzaku appears to be saying to the Lancelot; urging it to hang in there, to go faster, to bring the planes down safely, etc. ↩
6 Specifically, the type of tightness one feels in one's chest, caused by powerful feelings. ↩
7 The furigana here on この機体 (this machine) is for Lancelot Albion, just in case it wasn't clear enough what Suzaku means. More literally, the sentence would be: "This machine is a symbol that reduced the world to fear/dread/horror/etc." ↩
8 Notably not あいつら, which would be "they". ↩
9 Between this statement and the reference last chapter to Kouwa 2's beginning, this chapter should be taking place in early January (say, around January 5th, assuming Kallen's attending a university on the same schedule as real-world Japanese universities). What's less clear is whether the "a.t.b." date here would be 2019 or 2020. If you go by the re;boot movies, it's definitely 2020, but R2 itself was much fuzzier on the exact time of Lelouch's death... we can work backwards from this manga's "half a year" comment to a death in summer, perhaps... oh I don't know... August 10th. (For symmetry.) ↩

As for Lancelot & Guren...
I'm hoping you aren't the same anon who has already asked this three times. Because that would be pretty insensitive. I will remind you that I have a full-time job, and we're in the middle of a global pandemic. The world is on fire. People are very, very tired.
I was making pretty good progress on it earlier this year. Hopefully the world will stop being on fire, and I'll get back to it. In the meantime, you'll know I've started translating it again when you start seeing chapters of it on this blog again, and I'm just not making any promises as to when that will be.
Come on, folks, this is a hobby. :( This kind of pestering makes me less likely to translate the things you want, not more.

the official Twitter account when tweeting out this chapter mentioned that it represents the last chapter of the "interlude", and that the next chapter will begin the "main part", by which I think it means that we're done adapting the short story about the Zero Albion and are moving into the main movie adaptation.
It also mentioned that this comic adaptation has begun the story a bit differently than the movie, and a sort of "we hope you enjoy this version too" comment. :)

(Anonymous) 2020-10-03 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)So this is a interlude, you say . And that the story might begin a little differently than the movie? Interesting. Maybe this is supposed to be a timeline that tries to integrate the main story and the movie. I guess, only Shirley's fate will tell.
no subject
I know you aren't objecting to the use of the word interlude, but!! It is very much what the official twitter called this, using 幕間 which means an intermission or interlude between acts (like in a play). And if you are a little bit bothered by the usage of this for what seems more like a prologue or prelude, well, Japanese does have words for that, but they seem more strongly associated with music (all the terms for prelude are synonymous with 'overture'). So this is probably why you'll see 'interlude' pop up, sometimes even written in English, in Japanese media, where we wouldn't use that term as native speakers.
That aside: Yeah, I'm not sure. It's certainly a timeline that has so far integrated multiple manga-only characters from Oz the Reflection, Renya of Darkness, and Lancelot & Guren, one of which I'm currently guessing will be the 'unexpected' character to accompany Kallen throughout the rest of the adaptation, and has so far managed to avoid showing Shirley even where you'd definitely expect to see her (she would certainly have been invited to Ougi and Villetta's wedding, if she's still alive). I thought maybe they were trying to be ambiguous about which timeline they're in, but making a new timeline that integrates bits of everything is another tact. :)
timeline
(Anonymous) 2020-10-04 05:57 am (UTC)(link)no subject
A few points of order:
1.) I think you're confusing the fact that the re;boot movies put Lelouch's ascension to the throne explicitly in 2019 with any indication from the original TV series that it took place in 2018. Like, technically speaking, all the timeskips in R2 do is tell us it's been one month, then later two. They don't tell us what month it is now; they don't tell us what year it is now. In fact, CODE GEASS was a series that studiously avoided giving specific time stamps at pretty much all costs. The Re; manga follows this example and doesn't specify what year it is. Yes, that tends to lead one to assume it's still 2018, but...
2.) ...you're also talking about a series that has, like, never been any good at time. There's literally an episode, allegedly set in 2018, that flashes back to Marianne before her death, "eight years ago"; yet, we know she must have been dead at some point before Lelouch's dramatic speech to his father in 2009. Good thing that's not one of the most important dates in the series!
Or what about Akito, which was definitely supposed to take place in the same timeline as the original TV show but has a much more explicit timeline that really, deeply fails to line up with it?
Never mind the novelizations, which had their own radically different ideas about how much time had passed over the course of the first season.
Like, I'm sorry, Nonny, but you've put much more thought into the CODE GEASS timeline with this one comment than I think anyone at Sunrise... ever has.
3.) You're also a little confused about what I was calling "ambiguous". You'll get no argument from me that Re; was set in a timeline that at least hewed much closer to the original TV show than the movies. That's patently obvious.
What has been less necessarily obvious is whether Re;surrection is supposed to be in that same timeline.
Because the final chapter of Re; works just as well, if not better, as a bridge to the Miraculous Birthday special (or some variation of it featuring manga-only characters like Benio) than it does as a bridge to the Re;surrection movie, where Lelouch's return to earth was... well, less planned on his part. And the choice to start this adaptation with a new name, at "Chapter 1" rather than "Chapter 15", feels deliberate. Especially given the mixed reception when Ogasawara originally announced that Re; was going to "continue" to the movie.
Like, no one is saying you have to take the out Sunrise gave you, but it's definitely there, for fans who picked up Re; on the premise that it was going to be an adaptation of the Zero Requiem, filling in the time skips (as it originally billed itself), but who hadn't liked the movie and didn't want to think of the two as connected. Choosing not to mention Shirley's fate one way or another is one way in which this manga has so far left that out intact.
Establishing, as Ogasawara's tweet kind of does, that Re;surrection is going to be doing things differently from the movie is... a way of offering fans a different out; they might take Re; and Re;surrection as being in the same timeline, while the original TV show is not, despite certain similarities. (And, I mean, the inclusion of manga-only characters had already separated Re; from the original TV show to a degree.)
And all of this is fine and good! By all means, every fan reading this should take what they like from these manga and ignore what they don't like, just as Oukouchi and Gorou Taniguchi (not to be confused with Koujirou Taniguchi, the writer on these manga) have kind of always encouraged fans to do. Spinoffs and side stories have always been given a lot of creative freedom to do whatever they liked with the characters. The re;boot movies were positioned explicitly by the creative team as a "what-if" story, rather than a correction for the original ending of the series (which, they've said, they were perfectly happy with and didn't need changing).
Like, just have fun, Nonny. :) That's all any of us are trying to do.
no subject
(Anonymous) 2020-10-05 04:53 pm (UTC)(link)I agree with what you said about Shirley being invited to the wedding. I'm actually very interested in how they integrate everything since the movie timeline suffered from the side effects of time constraint. Thats why Shirley couldn't be killed.
One more thing, CC's line about one person vs the world, for some reason it sounds very sad to me. Like, the world at large is happy so her own feelings don't matter. Is she sad because of Lelouch's state or is it something much deeper. Maybe I'm looking too much into it, but that line has been bothering me. Also, Anya trying to comfort CC is cute.
Ps. Are you on the Cs' world discord server? If not, would you like to join?

I personally interpreted the sequence as her hiding what she did to Lelouch from them — the way she slams the door, her use of あいつも — so I read her as rejecting Jeremiah's interest and Anya's attempt to get her to share whatever's burdening her with them... but someone I follow on Twitter definitely assumed the opposite, that C.C. had been helped by them up to this point but maybe doesn't want or can't let them help her with what comes next. I guess we'll see as the story goes on?
And thank you! But I'm already overwhelmed by the number of Discord servers I'm in, haha. :)

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 04:05 am (UTC)(link)But here Shirley's fate is doubtful, who know who retrieved his body.
Ps. Ooh. Someone is popular.

I still don't think it makes any sense for Shirley to have retrieved the body, and every person C.C. theoretically told Lelouch was alive while leaving Suzaku completely in the dark only bugs me more, but Sunrise gonna Sunrise.

(Anonymous) 2020-10-06 01:24 pm (UTC)(link)Why Shirley. It makes the least amount of sense. Especially since apparently Schneizel assisted Shirley. Like what?
Just use Jerry or only Schneizel. Why involve Shirley. Anyway, I'll stop ranting about it.😂

(Anonymous) 2020-10-11 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)Do you know how long this series is going to be? Because it looks like they're about to roll straight into the movie adaptation, but I was wondering if there was going to be another chapter or two before we start with that.

THANK YOU FOR DOING THIS TRANSLATIONS
(Anonymous) 2020-10-16 01:09 am (UTC)(link)what I hope is:
- a new villain that we don't know about
- C.C past and real name reveal
- a lelouch without geass because I like when they keep consistency in the powers laws of the universe
- a better reveal and reactions to lelouch revival.
- a better resolve in the feelings of kallen: a true moment of honesty between lelouch and kallen
- a little more consistent in the characters personalities

I'm definitely also quietly hoping this manga will improve on the movie, but I'm trying to keep my own expectations pretty low in the hopes of being pleasantly surprised. :)
It's also worth remembering that the writing on this manga is being done by Koujirou Taniguchi, a long-time producer on CODE GEASS but not one of the TV show's writers, and in the commentary pages of the Re; manga, he expressed, in summary, that he "[hopes] to live up to the expectations of [the original creative team as well as the fans]".
Given that, I think we're unlikely to see dramatic changes to the plot here, and I definitely don't think this writer would feel worthy of a serious, long-time reveal like C.C.'s real name.
(Also, being completely honest, after fourteen years...? I don't know that I actually want that kind of reveal. I know that, in theory, the creative team has always known what C.C.'s real name is, but I'm not sure there's one they could tell us that would actually feel "true" to me. Plus, I really like the mystery behind C.C., and I always have. Which is part of why I've never sought out the Renya manga.)
I think your best bets are probably more detail in the characters' reactions to Lelouch's return and a scene with Lelouch and Kallen. But whatever happens, I hope it'll be something we can all enjoy, at least parts of, regardless of what our headcanons are, or what our ships are.
(The original TV show's ending had at least one significant advantage over the movie in that regard: none of the 'ships "won" in any definitive way, but plenty of people felt like their 'ship had won, which is kind of a neat trick if you can manage it. The fanbase might not have been altogether satisfied, but... well, I think a greater proportion of it was happier, shall we say. Lelouch/C.C. is a ship I really liked in the TV show, and I was pretty dissatisfied with the way the re;boot movies handled it, as I think I've mentioned.)
P.S. — I definitely agree about geass and consistency with the rules of the universe. It just makes it feel like there's something wrong with Lelouch's Code, which I sort of think is intentional, but sort of think might not have been...? Maybe the manga will be more revealing!
Is Shirley dead in this timeline?
