Volume one, now on sale!!

SCHNEIZEL
Well, how nice to see all of you.

KALLEN
It was Zero and Nunnally's plight
that brought us here.

SCHNEIZEL
Of course.

KANNON
It's exactly as it was reported.
The incident happened in the Hashvess refugee camp.
According to information from their Black Knights escorts...

KANNON
The enemy's forces included multiple KMFs, as well as one unidentifiable machine3...

KALLEN
Unidentifiable?

CORNELIA
At first, this was thought to be the work of a local resistance group,
but they're too good for that.

SAYOKO
Too good to be random happenstance4, you mean.

TOUDOU
They had training, in combat strategy as well as tactics.
And to have KMFs from every country, thereby obscuring their affiliation with any individual one...
These were no ordinary terrorists.

KALLEN
If they could beat him...

KANNON
And according to the record, it seems the additional machine is a complete unknown, one we have no data on.

LLOYD
An unknown machine?!

SAYOKO
—Do we know what the perpetrator was after?

LLOYD
<bwahaha—>

TOUDOU
Not at this time.
There was an abduction, but no one has claimed responsibility for it.5

SCHNEIZEL
However, it would seem they were after Nunnally.

SAYOKO
Lady Nunnally?

LLOYD
What makes you say that?

SCHNEIZEL
Hashvess is in a... complicated situation, bordered as it is by five other nations.
None of which are wealthy, by any means — and, in fact, most are in need of the WHA's aid.

SAYOKO
Right, and the abduction of Lady Nunnally would only jeopardize that support...

CORNELIA
But we also can't assume they were after Zero.

CORNELIA
If they needed the head of the Black Knights, they still should have issued some sort of statement by now.
And there would have been no need to take Nunnally.

SCHNEIZEL
In summary: this isn't someone who desires aid,
but someone who wants Nunnally.

SAYOKO
Lady Nunnally...

SCHNEIZEL
So, that's where we are.

SCHNEIZEL
Personally, I suspect a neighboring country — Zilkhstan.

KALLEN
Zilkhstan, huh?
The so-called Land of Warriors...

KANNON
One which came to be through the integration of various foreign migrants — hailing from Europia, Africa, and elsewhere — with the area's original ethnic groups, who were living in this area approximately three hundred years ago.

KANNON
Once a lush land, Zilkhstan was attacked countless times by its neighbors. Its history was one of fighting to drive out invaders, over and over again.
But then the river that been the source of their prosperity dried up, and Zilkhstan's fall into decline began.

TOUDOU
Perhaps it's because of that history that Zilkhstan boasted so many skilled fighters,
which were then hired by so many other countries to fight their battles, until Zilkhstan became the mercenary kingdom it is today.

LLOYD
Ooh! So, that's it. That explains everything!

KALLEN
?

LLOYD
Look,
wouldn't you say it's peaceful nowadays?

LLOYD
If mercenary work was what put food on your table, wouldn't you be going hungry right now?

CORNELIA
Indeed.
And yet, Zilkhstan continues to reject overtures for both membership in the UFN and aid from organizations like the WHA.

SCHNEIZEL
Due to, again, historical context, I imagine...
...but that only makes it more suspicious.
Zilkhstan must believe it has some other way out of poverty.

NARRATION (likely Kallen)
A kingdom in poverty because they're a land of warriors.
Yet they have no need for aid.
So they went to Nunnally and made her disappear—

KALLEN
!

SCHNEIZEL
My intuition is telling me that there must be a connection between this kingdom and Nunnally's abduction.

SAYOKO
(All he needs is proof. The final missing piece...)

SAYOKO
Ah, I see.
So that's why you summoned us.

LLOYD
Can't just poke around without proof, after all~.
Might cause an international incident!

KALLEN
But if we were to go there as civilians, posing as tourists, we could get that proof.

SCHNEIZEL
Precisely.

TOUDOU
I hate to think of it as relying on civilians, but...

TOUDOU
...if it's a special agent, a brilliant scientist,

TOUDOU
and the Ace of the Black Knights—

TOUDOU
—then there's no one more reliable.

TOUDOU
Should your investigative team uncover proof, a second team is being put together to rescue Nunnally and Zero.
Cornelia will spearhead it.

CORNELIA
That way, if anything goes wrong, I can always claim to have been acting alone.
<step!>
But more than that—

SFX
<clench>

CORNELIA
I want to save my sister—
To save Nunnally... with my own two hands!

KALLEN
You got it.
Let's do this!

TOUDOU / CORNELIA (probably)
Thank you. / You have my gratitude.

SCHNEIZEL
Departure's in three days.
All arrangements should be made by then.

SCHNEIZEL
Come in, please.

1 モーニング in this context is a breakfast special.
2 If this is weird in English, good, because it's also sort of weird in Japanese; Schneizel describes the request he has for her (頼みがある) as beseechingly (折り入って), but also uses 君 (rude, if not directed at a friend) and くん (perhaps more familiar than Kallen would like).
3 The implication here is that the rest of the KMFs were standard models, and only Shalio's machine was unique.
4 らしすぎる here as in らしい — too much like something else — and 不自然 is more literally 'unnatural', but in context Cornelia, Sayoko, Toudou, and Kallen are all in agreement here: this isn't the work of local rabble who just happened to grab Nunnally and Zero because they're famous and they were vulnerable, it was an organized assault by a group that had planned for such a thing.
5 Specifically, the type of claiming-responsibility that is done after a crime, such as a bombing.
6 Standing at attention sharply.
