[TRANSLATED] Lelouch the Tutor (Chapter 22)

Original Scans: courtesy of Comic NewType

JEREMIAH
All right!
A good day begins with proper attention to grooming!

JEREMIAH
And so class begins!
It was for all of you young people who will build a brighter tomorrow —
that I became a teacher!

JEREMIAH
...?
It seems Lelouch isn't here...

SFX
<bang!>

LELOUCH
Please! Excuse my tardiness!

JEREMIAH
Hmm.

JEREMIAH
The second time this month...
You'd better have a good reason for being late.

LELOUCH
I had to stop by the Middle School Division, and I'm afraid that made me late.
I'll be more careful from now on.

JEREMIAH
(Right, he would have been escorting his younger sister Nunnally...)
...See to it that you are.

LELOUCH
Yes, sir.

JEREMIAH
Now, as I was saying.
We last left off on page 87—

SUZAKU
???

JEREMIAH
...So,
for this next problem, would anyone...

LELOUCH
<snooze>

JEREMIAH
Lelouch Lamperouge!

LELOUCH
<startle>

LELOUCH
<glance>
The answer to this problem?

LELOUCH
The value can be expressed as root 3 over 3.

JEREMIAH
!
Correct.
(...Of course any son of Madame Marianne would have a truly frightening intellect1.)

JEREMIAH
Very well...
Suzaku Kururugi, the next problem!

SUZAKU
Y, yes, sir!
Um... given that Y equals KX in this equation...

LELOUCH
Suzaku, before you try to solve it, check the corresponding change diagram!

JEREMIAH
(Ohh, yes. What perfect advice. After all, a true friend would want to help him find the answer rather than simply giving it to him.)

SUZAKU
Oh! I see now!

SUZAKU
The answer is...
the square root of two.

JEREMIAH
That's correct...

JEREMIAH
Better still, next time, if you could realize as much on your own.

SFX
<flip>

<bing-bong, bing-bong!>

JEREMIAH
Well, then...
Let's leave it there for today.

SFX
<chatter>

JEREMIAH
(Heh. I remember when Madame Marianne was that age...)

JEREMIAH
(She really had me at her beck and call...)

JEREMIAH
Haha...

JEREMIAH
Ah...

JEREMIAH
(Isn't that Lelouch...?)

SFX
<pant, pant>

JEREMIAH
(He should be in class...)

JEREMIAH
There's nothing admirable about skipping class, I hope you realize.

LELOUCH
Erk—
Mr. Jeremiah...

LELOUCH
...It's just that physical activity isn't really my forte.
JEREMIAH
(I see, he's skipping gym.)

JEREMIAH
You know, you really are very like your mother.

LELOUCH
?!
You—
You're acquainted with my mother?

JEREMIAH
Oh, yes. We attended the same school.
Though she was quite a few years ahead of me, so I can't say I was a true mentee2, or anything.

JEREMIAH
Your mother was a truly exceptional person, who later came to give a lecture while I was still in school.
Actually, if I hadn't met Madame Marianne, I would never have become a teacher.

TEXT
<exceptional>

LELOUCH
Exceptional... you say?

JEREMIAH
Heheh.
Oh, goodness, yes. She was most unconventional.

JEREMIAH
...Fortunately, I was eventually assigned to teach at this school, and had the opportunity to meet her again when she brought you both here...

LELOUCH
(So you already knew him back then, Mother...?)

JEREMIAH
In fact, when your parents left Japan, they asked me to look after you and your sister.

LELOUCH
You don't say...

JEREMIAH
...Oh, yes. That's why I simply must ensure that you grow up to be fine, upstanding adults.

SFX
<draws a breath>

JEREMIAH
Or, in other words—

JEREMIAH
MISS VILLETTA, LELOUCH LAMPEROUGE IS RIGHT HERE!!!

LELOUCH
Wha—

VILLETTA
Lelouch, you sonuva...!
So this is where you've been hiding!

LELOUCH
Damn it— These absurd teachers!!

JEREMIAH
Hah hah hah!
You may as well face it like a man! You're no good at running away!
Be diligent, and you will overcome your weaknesses!

JEREMIAH
(He really is growing up to be a fine young man, Madame Marianne.)

JEREMIAH
(Although I suppose he still has a ways to go...)

JEREMIAH
(And he certainly seems to have inherited your way with people.)

KALLEN
Look, I know you say you suck at this stuff.

KALLEN
But if you keep cutting gym, you're gonna get held back.
Let that motivate you! You're no weaker than anybody else, you just gotta try.

C.C.
Well, that's not gonna work.

C.C.
I'm sure he'd love to get held back—
Then he and Nunnally would be in the same class!

SHIRLEY
What, really?
That's taking brotherly love way too far...

VILLETTA
Now, now—
I think that's enough...

LELOUCH
...ugh...

<TO BE CONTINUED>

1 Lit. 'Quick-witted to the point of being frightening'. He's also using very respectful language for 'Marianne's son'.
2 Lit. 'Her direct kouhai'. Kouhai — or underclassman — is the opposite of senpai (upperclassman), and in Japan one can be a kouhai in the sense of having a special relationship where the senpai looks out for you and tries to help you — or much more generally. Jeremiah was evidently the latter.
