SUZAKU
Kallen—
Are you so determined to stand in our way?
SFX
<hsssss>

KALLEN
Suzaku.
All this time, I've misunderstood you.
SUZAKU
!
KALLEN
Even though we were coming at it from different angles, I used to think...
...you still had Japan's best interests at heart, in your own way.
KALLEN
But now!

SUZAKU
I...
SUZAKU
There's something Lelouch and I1 must do2.
KALLEN
I'm sure.
And that's why you want all this power...

SFX
<clench—>
KALLEN
In that case—
SFX
<hum of power>
SUZAKU
In that case...
SFX
<sharply—>

KALLEN
I have to get rid of you3.
Take you out,
then stop him.
SUZAKU
And that's something...
I can't allow!
SFX
<whoosh—>
<crash>

<whoosh>

SUZAKU
(—I wonder...
When did we first meet?
Was it really on the field of battle?)

SUZAKU
(Or on a peaceful, ordinary day?
I can't remember anymore.
It just feels like we've always been at odds.)

SFX
<clang!>
<fwoosh>
<whoosh>
<burst>
KALLEN
This won't work, you know!
SFX
<clash>
<whoosh—>

SFX
<fwoosh>
<slice>
KALLEN
Not when we've been fighting against this sort of thing3
with the Resistance all this time!
SFX
<burst, burst>
<slash>
SFX
<zzz>
SUZAKU
Well, you could have worked within the system!

SFX

KALLEN
You and your system4—
SFX
<whoosh>
<bzzt>

SFX
<roar—>
KALLEN
And what about all the people who can't work within that system — what are they supposed to do?!
SFX
<bang—>
KALLEN
And if that's not what you meant—
SFX
<zing—>

SFX
<fwhoosh>
KALLEN
—then by all means, tell me what you did mean!
SFX
<whoosh>
<whoosh—>
SUZAKU
!
SFX
<bang>
<boom>
<fwhoosh—>

SUZAKU
You—
KALLEN
But don't talk down to me from on high!
SFX
<rooooar>
<fwoosh—>
<roooooar>
<bang—>
<crash—>

SFX
<bzz>

SUZAKU
Where's your justice for them!
SFX
<bang>
<zing>
SUZAKU
(—It's not that simple.)

SUZAKU
(One person's vaunted justice is another person's evil.
Which is exactly why we have to bring all the people of the world to the same table.)

SFX
<whoosh—>
<bang—>
<crack—>
<fwoosh>
<zing>
SUZAKU
(But it's too late to just invite them.)

KALLEN
Tch—
SFX

SUZAKU
(Dissent begets hatred.)
SFX
<bang>
<zing>
SUZAKU
(And that starts a cycle.)

<fwoosh—>
SUZAKU
Damn—

SUZAKU
(People are capable of understanding each other.
They could create a gentler world.
And yet—)
SFX
<vrooom—>

SUZAKU
People—
The world—
SFX
<hsss—>
SUZAKU
They can't be allowed to just keep doing whatever they please!
SFX
<fwoom, fwoom—>
KALLEN
So you're going to force them to do as you please?!
SFX
<zing—>

SFX
<bang>
<zing>
KALLEN
That's despicable!!
SUZAKU
(Oh, I'm well-aware.
And that's exactly why the Zero Requiem is necessary.)

SUZAKU
(And it's for that reason—
—that I'm here!!)

SFX
<whoosh>
<roar—>
1 Suzaku swaps personal pronouns here (from 自分(jibun) to オレ(ore)); his use of 自分 doesn't get as much fandom attention as his use of 僕(boku), but it shows up in a lot of places — usually where he's being more formal, instead of using 私(watashi), but sometimes he uses it to emphasize that a given choice is decidedly his own. The swap here is probably because Kallen's assessment gave him pause — made him wish, however briefly, that he could actually explain what he's doing here to her. ↩
2 やればならない is rather stiff, the 'literary' version of the already-formal やらなければならない (in more casual conversation, Suzaku has shown a preference for using the なくちゃ shortening), which further depersonalizes Suzaku's sentiment here. While いけない would describe something Suzaku feels a personal need to do, ならない is more often used for laws, agreed-upon social expectations, etc. So there's a subtle nuance here, both in that Suzaku might be indicating to Kallen that he and Lelouch aren't doing something they want to do, but something they mysteriously feel they must... and that Suzaku might be inviting her to interpret him more self-righteously, as this structure indicates that Kallen should both understand what they're doing without needing to be told and, perhaps, agree with it. ↩
3 Kallen's retort, meanwhile, is a direct contrast on multiple levels: いちゃいけない is so much more personal. ↩
3 Kallen doesn't specify what, exactly, 'we've' been fighting against — technically she seems to be saying that she's been fighting as a member of the Resistance in order to resist. But contextually it's clear that she means something like, "We've been fighting tyrants like you this whole time, and we're not about to give in now." ↩
4 Lit. "[In] that system..." But Kallen then goes on to use a completely different (loan)word for system, and between these two things she is clearly offloading 組織 onto Suzaku personally. ↩
