And now it's time again for "dissecting terrible Japanese".

For Japanese teachers, anime is both a blessing and a curse; I've had teachers who were pleased I had "another source" of Japanese -- who admired my mastery of simple but informal things we wouldn't be learning in class. (All that's coming to mind right now is "yatta!", but I know it was slightly more complicated than that.) And while you won't learn anything too terrible from anime itself1...

...you might be led astray by fan-translators of anime and manga.

It is a strangely-common practice among fan-translators to encourage readers to "learn" Japanese a few words at a time -- sometimes subtly, by leaving those words untranslated, and sometimes overtly with short segments added to the beginning or end of their translations that outright tell readers, "Here are some Japanese words you should know, and we encourage you to start learning on your own!"

So, it's not really the fault of the large segment of teenagers and young adults who are very interested in learning Japanese informally. They've been told to do it! They've been encouraged. And this leads to a number of forum threads wherein one Japanese language-learner will ask a question about grammar or syntax or vocabulary and get responses from many, many other language-learners who, to be blunt, have no idea what they're talking about. It's the Japanese equivalent of the blind leading the blind, and invariably when I put some romaji into Google because I'm looking for something specific but can't remember what, I will find a forum thread or two that make me cringe. This is why you need a teacher, guys!

Yesterday's catch, snipped from Google's description text of a forum I didn't even visit:

takusan nihongo ga shirimasu no hito ga arimasuneh.

There are so many problems here that I can't even stand it.

a breakdown of the terrible. warning: not a lot of explanations for Japanese beginners in here, just whining. )
rainfall: A tiny bunny rabbit curled up in a cup. (bunny in a cup)
One more skit! Because today was kind of lame and translating cute skits makes me feel better.

SPOILERS FOR RAVEN-RELATED EVENTS BEFORE ZAUDE.

Which One Is He, Really? (scenario skit about SPOILER spoiler SPOILER) )
rainfall: A girl holds flowers in front of her face and peers through them. (little white flowers)
I picked this out to do some Japanese practice at random, little knowing I was going to be lucky enough to get one of the skits where they talk about how much Flynn also loves fighting. Bonus flusterable Rita. ♥

Unexpected (A skit about Flynn's sekrit love of fighting) )
rainfall: A girl stands in the midst of fallen leaves. You can't see her face. (Default)
This scene is one of several that takes place in Zaphias, if you return there after the events at after Aurnion. In Kouli's guide, it's the extra event that occurs when you "check the fountain" in the Lower Quarter.

As before: When we go back through the game, I'll add better descriptions of what's going on during this scene. I was too preoccupied on my pass through it copying down all the dialogue, and I know I missed out on the action. :(

Also, note that Hanks drove me a little bit crazy in this scene because he doesn't use nouns. He uses pronouns. It's clear if you squint for a while who he's talking about where, because of context and his word use, but I slotted in names to make things a little easier on you!

Thank you forever to [livejournal.com profile] kupoke, who helped me with a couple of the tricky lines and reassured me about everything else.

Translation! )
rainfall: A pair of cartoony arms encircle the words "A huge hug for you." (huge hug)
In order to get this scene, you'll first need to:
  • cook at least 600 times (with anyone) and MASTER three recipes with Patty
  • stop in at Nordopolica at some point after getting your "airship" and talk to the flopsweating young man near Fortune's Market.
  • head to Zaphias after Flynn joins the party permanently and stop in at the inn to talk to the woman who behind the counter

When we go back through the game, I'll add -- better descriptions of what's going on during this scene. I was too preoccupied on my pass through it copying down all the dialogue, and I know I missed out on the action. :(

We beat Roxas. Strategy here!

In other news:

Massive spoilers, an Organization scene that takes place right after the events of Betwixt & Between. )

We're going to post everything properly on [livejournal.com profile] kaybek when we've finished the game and unlocked Theater Mode (and can rewatch all these cut scenes), but this one is. kind of. really important. Anyone interested in that part of the game? Should definitely read this and track down a download of the scene to watch.

Okay, I was kind of half expecting some reworking of the enemies, because I remember that the Heartless had been tweaked in FM (although to be honest, I never noticed the differences aside from the color changes) -- but the Nobody enemies in FM+ have been overhauled something whoa.

Among things we noticed:

Up to the Sixth Day. )

Btw, Axel/Xaldin/ProbablyXemnas scene... )

We've started!

Prologue click!

It's very short. But the profiles, which are filled with ridiculous sentences, took ages. (The normal chapters are longer, 30-40 tiny!novel!pages each.) Also, apparently the author of the novels, Kanemaki Tomoko, has written yaoi novels. Hmm.

Dear Kanemaki-sensei/Amano-sensei,

You're wonderful, we love you, we would birthe children for you, and I'm given to understand that hurts.

Love,
Libek

P.S. What the hell does the English word hysteric mean, and what does it have to do with Larxene's profile?

Posting to spread the translated KH2 manga goodness! [livejournal.com profile] kay_willow and I just finished translating all five chapters of the currently released KH2 manga and plan to keep up with them as they come out, as well as tackle some other materials, such as the novels. (The fifth volume came out early this morning, we had it completed at six o'clock even with me in school and her at work, for a sign of our devotion. ♥)

Sorry, but we will not provide you with scans. [livejournal.com profile] maiki is the wonderful scanning goddess.

And we will also not be doing scanslations. They're on the edge of legality and we'd prefer not to get into any trouble. We're just translating because we love KH2! And translating!

Come visit and watch if you like~

Chapter 1: Twilight Town

Apologies if you get spammed. We posted this message in like five different KH communities. ♥
