rainfall: (wink ;; never make that face again)
So, Marvel's Agents of SHIELD premiered this week, and... damn, it sure hit the spot. In just one episode, we felt the true power of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: there were references to Thor, references to The Incredible Hulk, so many references to The Avengers, and -- perhaps most satisfying of all -- references to Iron Man 3.

CAUTION: Falling opinions. )

I HAVEN'T SEEN IT BEFORE THIS MOMENT, so no spoilers please!

There will, however, be spoilers in the comments on this post. You are warned. 8D

SILENT HILL: HOMECOMING
a recommendation

I really, really enjoyed this game. I was thrilled to play it, and, with the exception of some brutally difficult pieces sprinkled throughout, I continued to be thrilled by it until the credits rolled. I have noticed that many of the people reviewing the game do not seem to agree with this estimation, but, while some of their criticisms are not totally without merit, the vast majority of them are -- I would venture to say -- unfair.

In this review, I would like to repudiate those criticisms.

WARNING: I've tried my best to avoid it with HOMECOMING, but there are several spoilers for previous SILENT HILL games sprinkled throughout, especially SILENT HILL 2.

A response to other reviews -- most specifically, the one on Zero Punctuation. )

I think that about covers it. ♥

Basically: Play the game. But if you really have complaints -- if you seriously think this is anything but a step forward from past efforts, or that the series producers did anything but serve up a slightly flawed* masterpiece with a lot of potential for future SILENT HILLs -- then I don't think you've been paying attention to the series. End of story.

*There's an enormous amount of detail and thought put into things up until about three fourths of the way through the game, at which point you pretty much stop getting non-combat Quick Time Events and other little details similarly fall off, but it's an amazing game for first-time developers.

A movie like this, you think, it can't be as good as everyone's saying.

It was.

SO MANY SPOILERZ )

Ending thought: Purrpurrpurrpurr.

I am one happy little Batman fangirl.

Avatar series finale: Possibly the most awesome thing to ever awesome. No, wait, that was episode 3.17.

I won't say much because I hate spoiling people, but uh, thank you for not giving us an epilogue where everyone is twenty years older and married with 2.5 kids, a dog, and thoroughly boring lives. I actually think maybe you could have done it and made me not annoyed by it, but I love you for not doing it. Series do not always need epilogues like that.

Dr. Horrible? Watch it now. Do it before it's no longer free, and enjoy.

Oh, but there's singing. Apparently some people didn't get that memo. (You know, the one always mentioned whenever the name comes up, the one that is in fact in the title of the thing. Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog: The word sing, you see, implies that music will be involved.)

(Sadly, the word -along implied that there would be a little bouncing ball to follow and words scrolling along the bottom of the screen to help you sing, too, but this is not the case.)

I don't know how anyone can not love these two things. If you don't, I -- I just don't know what to say to you. I presume some aspect of fandom has ruined either the product itself or the creator, and that is so sad. I... have a hug for you? :D

New layout

I've been tooling around with it for days, but I think I'm done now.

The end result is a layout with scrolling divs, three images, and the newest thing in modern browsering: RGBA colors.

As a result, lots of people can see my page, but only the folks using Firefox 3 and Safari 3 will be able to really read my content.

I would never do this kind of thing with a community, or a website I wanted lots of people to visit, but I figure my personal LJ, most likely viewed from people's flists anyway, is the safest place to experiment.

Love it? Hate it? Heh, sorry. I can never use stuff when it's hot off the griddle, so this once I'm making an exception. ♥

Omg ow.

Kingdom Hearts, Final Mix. (Not to be confused with FM+, yo.) My hands are throbbing a little, but for anyone else who ever feels like replaying, I have a very solid strategy for you when you reach Maleficent's dragon form:

Tinkerbell + Aero magic + spamming the attack button.

And yes, that's it. That's all you do. It's a bit crude, perhaps, but it gets the job done.

Now me, I've never really used Summons before. I only grudgingly used them in KH2, because they were a requirement for Jiminy's psychotic journal. So I'm not especially "down" with them. But from what I can tell, Tinkerbell essentially uses her pixie dust to keep you alive. She'll heal Sora and his party members all throughout the battle, with no especial time limit -- she'll only leave if Sora gets KO'd, and only after saving him from death.

In case you hadn't guessed yet, the use of Aero is to make Tink's job a little easier, and so keep her around for the entire battle -- Aero is a neat and somewhat underrated little spell that reduces or entirely nullifies a lot of the damage Sora would otherwise absorb himself.

With these simple steps, I was able to defeat Maleficent's dragon form with (more or less) ease -- it just takes a while. I think my battle was somewhere between half an hour and forty minutes, though of course your mileage may vary.

(I'm also on the quick-leveling path, choosing the staff and sacrificing the sword, and I swear this seems to have made the game a little harder than I remember it, but it could just be that all those Triangle Reaction Commands have spoiled me. :( )

Corpse Bride

This movie is very quiet and understated, and I feel like an awful person confessing this, but the first time I watched it it was with someone else underwhelmed by the movie, and I think his reaction was catching.

I was expecting The Nightmare Before Christmas REDUX or something, I think, and this movie isn't it -- the musical numbers, and indeed most of the rest of it, is much more subdued. And without that raucous energy, I just... stopped really watching.

I rented it only on [livejournal.com profile] kay_willow's urging, because she'd never seen it, and part of me wanted to see the ending, which I'd totally missed.

Anyway, enough confessing my dark sins (seriously, not having loved this movie feels like one): So. awesome.

Corpse Bride > Enchanted. It is fact. )

This is so awesome. I can't even express it really. Main Guy did not get Main Girl. Hollywood so very, very rarely does that. (And it would have been so easy to make Victor's new suitor somehow perfect for her and tie her off that way.) They touched and changed each other, he helped her and she helped him (before her, I don't think he would've been able to articulate his feelings for Victoria), but they didn't end up in bed together.

Omg, seriously.

I have, I'll readily admit, always been more of a SEGA girl than a Nintendo girl. For some reason, mascots like Sonic the Hedgehog and NiGHTS just held more appeal to me. I like their sharp angles, their slight alien fierceness, the odd, unfriendly quality to them. It appeals more than Mario's marshmallow design and cheery personality. I don't know why.

(And yeah, I know Sonic Team was responsible for both these games, so maybe I should just say them.)

And now, more Sonic the Hedgehog talk. I am a fangirl, you're warned. )

So, we've all heard the song, right? And it's awesome. Because it is. Called "Still Alive," the song plays at the end of Portal, just as you're about to get your reward cake for completing the game. (What lies, of course you get your cake. :O They wouldn't do that to you.) It is slow and mechanical and, says the songwriter, passive-aggressive.

But as the song plays, the following text appears in the side window, which is mostly just the lyrics, but... Hee.

Here goes:

Done with finals. To-do list now includes:

1.) Clean up apartment;
2.) Find people to move in for us in January;
3.) Sign up for classes (I know I'm way behind, but I'm STILL struggling to figure out what hours I should work around);
4.) Sign up for [livejournal.com profile] springkink;
5.) Do a piece for [livejournal.com profile] bleach_het's December meme;
6.) Finish exchange fic for [livejournal.com profile] bleach_bdsm;
7.) Start up My Game, [livejournal.com profile] kay_willow's Game;
8.) Breathe. :D

Eight, of course, being the least important of them all.

Tonight, I slacked off of everything by popping in Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix and dying repeatedly.

And game babble goes here! )

So full of spoilers, from Series 1-3 + Torchwood.

Also, should be working on my research paper, but I've got half my quizzes for Friday done, so I'm not doing so terribly really. Tomorrow will also be for schoolwork.

He played Spike in Buffy. This year he's doing a variety of very weird things.

My recent "Hey, that's the guy who played Spike" sightings:

a.) Piccolo. In the new Dragon Ball movie. (You know, this guy.)

b.) Torchwood, where, in season two, the WikiPedia article says he'll guest star and play a character who has a "horny and violent" sexual encounter with Captain Jack, to quote the page directly. Wh, what.

c.) Lex Luthor. In the Superman animated movie, "Superman Doomsday," which was being rather desperately advertised on every Avatar DVD in the first season.

What, what, what.

I. I'm all confused. D:

[livejournal.com profile] kay_willow and [livejournal.com profile] haku took this the other day, so~. So many things on which we contradict each other, [livejournal.com profile] kay_willow, that it's really pretty amazing we manage to live together. Also, thanks Mom. And in this episode of "House," we learn that Wilson tops House.

House tops Cuddy, but come on, who's surprised.

(I'm pretty sure this makes every fanfic ever wrong, but there's never any good "House" fanfic. Immutable law of the universe, or so it seems. :\ )

I actually really enjoyed this episode. What the writers added in to fill it out a little was light and funny and nice, because I've been missing the Bleach humor recently.

But that's not so much the reason for this post. No one else has noticed, as near as I can tell, so I just had to point out Gin's pretty blue bow.

Thank you, anime, so much. D: I noticed something weird and pale blue protruding from Gin's hips in this picture, but I really wasn't sure what it was until we got that nice color lineup. :D

Well, maybe Gin's hakama are easier to get open than normal hakama because of his bow.
