[TRANSLATED] CODE GEASS: Lelouch of the Re;surrection (Chapter 5, Pt 1)
Original Scans: courtesy of Comic NewType

NARRATION
Kouwa 2.
A year has passed since the defeat of the Villainous Emperor Lelouch.

NARRATION
After its reorganization to center around the United Federation of Nations, the world was enjoying an unprecedented peace.

NARRATION
This year would come to be known by later historians as the Miraculous Tomorrow — a period free from war.

NARRATION
However, this same peace also caused one nation great distress.
A kingdom called Zilkhstan, also known as the Land of Warriors.

NARRATION
This unparalleled kingdom had withstood every attempted invasion from a major power ever since its inception.
Its soldiers were sought-after mercenaries in conflicts all around the world, where they often played a decisive role.
As a country with land that was 90% barren and which had no natural resources to speak of, Zilkhstan's major exports were all military.

NARRATION

BOLVONA
Even if there are no more large-scale conflicts,
and no further need of our soldiers to fight in them,
there must still be small skirmishes.
BOY
And I'll leave that to you, Forgnar.
<Ruler of Zilkhstan, Shalio>

SHALIO
But there's really nothing to fear...

1 <family-member>上 is honorific language. For those keeping score, this is the pattern Lelouch used once to refer to his father and then later to refer to Schneizel. The grandness of it fits well with 我々.↩
2 'The other party/side'. Another country, perhaps, but a specific one that he expects his audience to already be familiar with from previous discussions.↩
3 Thief/rebel/traitor/etc.↩
4 So, this is undoubtedly supposed to be something like نعم يا (صاحب) الجلالة / Yes, (Your) Majesty, but the transliteration into Japanese (namu jara rattaku) is... really not great, and the official sub for it (namjala latak) is somehow even worse. The Japanese fandom has more or less decided this isn't even supposed to be a real language! Yeesh. 😵↩

Heh, it's only the twice. First when he was trying to ask Charles why he was freezing them out in the throne scene in 2009 a.t.b.
The Britannia siblings universally refer to the man as The Emperor, rather than even an honorific form of "Father", but in the scene in question Lelouch does attempt to asset that Charles is his and Nunnally's father and should be there for him. I think his presumption of 父上 comes right as the guards slam down their spears to block his path, right before Charles stands up and starts snarling at him.
(With 20/20 hindsight, one supposes Charles didn't want anyone (read: V.V.) thinking Lelouch was special to him, and therefore worth murdering, but you know. I agree with Lelouch's assessment of his parents in late R2, that they weren't actually all THAT concerned for his and Nunnally's well-being.)
The second time is in a next-episode ramble, and it only happens to make a point. Lelouch starts to say something about "Father", only to cut himself off and correct himself: あの男, That Man.
(imho the official subs for that moment get it wrong, they interpret it as Lelouch saying "my father, that man" instead of "fath— that man")
Anyway Lelouch's use of them is otherwise not really supposed to be unusual, he does it because He's Royalty. (兄上 is also how Cornelia refers to Schneizel, iirc.) It's really his less-honorific terminology that I find more surprising, like that he apparently used to call Clovis 兄さん when he was nine, or his use of 母さん; maybe it's supposed to reflect that Marianne was a commoner, or maybe it's supposed to let you know that he used to feel closer to Clovis than to Schneizel, let alone his other brothers and sisters (apart from Euphemia). Nunnally's own language (お兄様, お姉さま, お母様) is also not quite what you'd expect from a princess (nor is her formality in general — royales and nobles often speak somewhat stiffly, but rarely with Nunnally's level of ます/です, etc), but that's probably at least somewhat to show how deferential she is. And, unlike Lelouch, she's never really drawn herself up straight and started speaking..... any more like a princess.
As for the rest of it... yeah, I'm not sure. Maybe the manga will make it clearer? We still have half this chapter left, not to mention the rest of however many chapters there will be. Right now, all he indicated was an intention to go to "the other party", so I've left it equally vague.
Thanks for this - Want to give you something back!
(Anonymous) 2020-11-23 05:59 pm (UTC)(link)I was wondering if you wanted something back - I'm a fanfic writer and could write a prompt for you. I'm game for anything that doesn't involve Suzaku bashing (I'm a big Suzaku stan). LokasennaHiddleston on Archive of our own. You might know me as The Unholy Trinity girl LOL.
Once again, thanks! Really appreciate your work!

Lelouch also does a lot more code-switching than anyone else, and frankly more than you usually see in "dramatic" Japanese (e.g., anime/manga/video games/dramas/movies). So his speech patterns vary a lot. There's Lelouch-the-prince, who uses 我 sometimes as a personal pronoun (rather archaic, it has almost entirely fallen out of use in normal Japanese except for 我々); there's Lelouch-the-teenager, who uses 俺 and very plain Japanese; Lelouch-the-innocuous-Ashford-student, who still uses 俺 but whose Japanese is a little more polite (he will pull out です and ます sometimes, particularly to be facetious with Milly — there's a lot of this speech pattern in Lelouch the Tutor); Lelouch-as-Zero, more formal and precise, and also trying to pass for older than he is, who uses 私 as a personal pronoun; and then there's Lelouch-the-Demon-Emperor, which blends "Zero" with "Prince".
I feel really bad for the English dub especially because there was just no way to translate all of that, and as a result Dubbed Lelouch is a very different animal, despite the actor definitely trying his best heh.

(Also I love Suzaku and would never ask for anything remotely bash-y.)

Re: chapters
At the same time, I don't think I'm going to change how I'm referring to these chapters, because they're not going to line up with the paper version anyway: Chapter 5 Pt 1, for example, is probably just going to be "Load 5" (including all the parts), don't you think? :) NewType's website just calls them things like 第5話その1, or....... well, shoot, now I forget the exact convention, but something like 第2話前 / 第2話後 (which is more like "Chapter 2: Before" and "Chapter 2: After").
It's been kind of terribly inconsistent and I am not trying too hard to keep up with it, since yeah, once it's in book form, all the chapter titles are going to not only change formatting conventions, but also be given names and rearranged a bit.
(There's at least one chapter I know of where the digital version actually has an extra page, just because the digital version needed to reiterate stuff due to the gap between chapters.)
