...Huh?
Euphemia li Britannia tipped her head to one side, puzzled by the lush greenery that surrounded her. An enormous garden stretched out in all directions, shining in the dazzling sunlight. After a moment, she recognized it. This was her mother's villa, where she had been born and raised. Of course, Euphemia would have liked to know what she was doing there, but even stranger was the little girl she could see running through the garden.
"Sissy1~"
Her curly hair aflutter, small arms swinging in earnest, the girl ran as fast as her little legs could carry her through the thick grass. She had stained the hem of her skirt, and that wouldn't do at all. Mother would give her such a scolding! But the little girl didn't seem to care about making her mother angry. She was too busy playing tag with her big sister — a big sister who had kindly given up some of her precious free time between sword lessons.
"Ah...!" the little girl yelped, her arms flailing out. She must have tripped or something, because she fell down on the spot with a whimper, and began to cry.
Oh...
Don't cry. You're all right. The ground was soft, and that sort of fall was never very painful. You didn't even get hurt. Go on, get back up, you can do it!
But the little girl's enormous eyes were brimming over with tears. Suddenly, a hand extended to her.
"Hey, now. Are you all right, Euphy?"
Powerful but gentle arms swept the smaller girl up and held her in an easy embrace.
"You've really got to watch where you're going."
The little girl sniffled. "Sissy..."
"Uh-huh. Your big sister's here. So no more tears. If you keep crying, you'll make me cry, too."
A sob. "Forgive me...?"
"Sure. There, there..."
Sheesh.
You're spoiling me, Cornelia. With a sister like you, I'll never really grow up.2 I've been so sheltered, is it any wonder I'm completely dependent on others? I'm older now, but nothing I've done — not leaving school to become Area 11's Sub-Viceroy, not choosing Suzaku as my knight, not even trying to create the Special Zone of Nippon... has changed that.
—Oh. I see.
It was then that Euphemia finally understood. This was a dream. A dream she sometimes had of long ago. Of her childhood, when she hadn't known anything, hadn't needed to think for herself. However, it had been quite some time since the dream had been so vivid.
In the dream, she and her sister were talking again.
"Sissy, will you... protect me?"
"Of course. Always and forever. And someday, once a knight has been chosen for you, they'll protect you, too."
"Ni...?"
"A knight. Knight. Your very own warrior, whose loyalty belongs only to you — whose life will be devoted to you."
"Um... this nite3... will they be stronger than Andre4?"
"Hahaha. That's a thought. Well, if they're as strong as Darlton, that should be fine. At the very least, they'll need to be stronger than me."
"But Andre said someday Sissy will be 'even stronger than I'."
"Hmm. Well, if that happens, that might be a very high bar to clear. But no, no, we'll find someone..."
There they sat — big sister and little sister, side-by-side, in the streaming sunlight. They never ran out of things to say to one another. They never stopped smiling. And, as she watched over them, Euphemia found herself smiling, too.
That's right.
This is how things are supposed to be between us. Well, recently we've done nothing but fight, but that's only temporary. It's just that we've both been too fixated on going our own ways. So, Sister, let's talk one more time. A nice long talk — about Suzaku, about the S.A.Z., about what we think and feel and hope for. And this time, let's be honest with each other.
Someday, I'll even tell you about Lelouch and Nunnally...
*
There was a white ceiling above her.
Euphemia blinked weakly, and again found herself wondering, Huh? She was no longer dreaming, but she didn't feel as clear-headed as she should have. She couldn't seem to focus. Euphemia tried to sit up, but her body remained motionless. And there was something in front of her face... glass? Was she inside a capsule? Why? What was this room?
All she could move was her head, and that only a little, but it was enough to see more of the room. Oh, Suzaku. And behind him, was that Major Lloyd Asplund and Lieutenant Cecile Croomy of ASEEC...? And some people she didn't recognize, dressed like — doctors.
"..."
Beside her, Suzaku was saying something. She couldn't hear him very well from within the capsule, but she recognized the shape of her name on his lips. Euphy, he had said.
Cecile, who was for some reason avoiding her eyes, reached out for something off to one side of Suzaku. It turned out to be some sort of button, and when she pushed it the capsule began to open silently. Good, now she would be able to hear better.
"Euphy..."
Or so she'd thought, but Suzaku's voice still seemed to be coming from very far away. What was going on? Was there something wrong with her eardrums?
Cecile urged Lloyd and the other people out of the room. With the door closed behind them, the only one left in the room was Suzaku.
"Euphy."
His voice still sounded faraway. How frustrating. She liked the way he spoke her name, the warmth in his voice. She wished she could have heard it better. Well, it wasn't that important. The homeland would make the announcement soon enough, and she would officially cease to be a Britannian princess. Then, he would be able to call her Euphy without having to worry about what other people might think. She would get to hear it all the time.
"Su... zaku..." Euphemia uttered. ...She didn't notice the weakness of her own voice, or even all the blood-transfusion tubes that were connected to her body.
"Euphy..."
Suzaku kept talking to her. But something really must have been wrong... otherwise, why would there have been so much sadness in his eyes?
"Why... did you give that order...?"
Order?
"What are you... talking about...?"
Suzaku's eyes flew wide with shock. "Euphy. Don't you remember...?"
Of course, Suzaku didn't know what had happened — and neither did Euphemia — but, in fact, he had experienced the same thing before she had: Lelouch's geass. The power of absolute obedience. One of its peculiarities was that those on whom the geass was used lost all memory of the event. And this was what had happened on Shikine Island5, when Lelouch had used his geass on Suzaku.
"Never mind that..." Euphy's dry lips parted again. "Suzaku, you're... Japanese, aren't you..."
"Huh? I... yeah."
For an instant, Euphemia's eyes flashed red. It wasn't as if Lelouch's command to kill all Japanese people had abated. The power of that sinister geass tried to stir her once more to action. Tried to bind her spirit. However—
"No—"
"Euphy...?"
"I mustn't... No! To think such a thing..."
Euphemia closed her eyes. She needed all of her strength. As she had before, she fought desperately against the urge welling up inside of her: fought to drive away the beast that wanted to lunge for his throat.
What sort of miracle was it, then, that the urge soon faded?
Had Euphemia rejected the geass through sheer willpower? Probably not. The command had been etched into her mind, into her very spirit. However, given that the strength of that spirit was itself already failing as her death drew near, the strength of the command etched into it also began to fail...
"Suzaku..." Euphemia breathed out, relieved that the urge had passed. "The ceremony," she continued, eyes still shut. "Nippon — what has become of it?"
Suzaku could only stare in disbelief. "Euphy, do you really... not remember anything...?"
Those who had survived were crowded around the stage in the ruined ceremony venue. The Black Knights were there, too, protecting the assembly.
Center stage, a single figure was welcomed with wild applause. He wore a black mask and a matching cape. The savior of the Japanese — or so they believed — and the leader of the Black Knights: Zero.
As they clamored for Zero, Zero, Lelouch stepped up to the microphone — everything he felt, repressed.
"People of Japan! All people who are oppressed by Britannia!"
His dramatic delivery garnered even more enthusiastic cheers.
"I have waited! While I have fought their injustice from the shadows, I have waited for them to come to their senses on their own! But now... our aspirations have been betrayed, in the worst possible way!"
Even the sky above, a cloudless blue, seemed to mock what Lelouch alone, of all the people gathered there, could have known was a farce.
"Euphemia, Third Princess of Britannia, lured us in with the sweet lie of this Specially Administrated Zone, only to take us from the heights of joy... to the very depths of despair with an act of barbarism that can only be called a massacre!"
"That's right! She tricked us!" came a voice from the throng in response to Zero's speech.
"Never forgive Euphemia!"
"Compassionate princess?! More like an evil witch!"
"Liar!"
As far as they knew, these exclamations were completely justified. Hidden by Zero's mask, Lelouch grimaced involuntarily.
"That's right! Euphemia is the symbol of Britannian hypocrisy! A murderer who used the pretense of a nation to cover up her crime!"
"Go to hell, Euphemia!"
"We won't be fooled again!"
"Death to Britannia!"
Anger and hatred began to spread like a virus, showing no signs of stopping or slowing down, despite the fact that none of the people who had truly been involved in the incident had wanted anything remotely like this to happen.
Meanwhile, the girl's time had begun to run out.
"Did I... make it work...?" Her eyes still closed, Euphemia kept pointing questions in Suzaku's direction. "Did I make the people of Japan... happy...?"
Suzaku let out a choking noise. In an instant, his eyes had reddened and welled up with tears. Still, he had to reply.
"Euphy... the S.A.Z. is..." Suzaku put a smile on his face. "The S.A.Z. is... a great success. Everyone is so happy. The Japanese people and everyone else, too..."
At that, Euphemia smiled from the bottom of her heart. The very vitality had been stolen from her face, but she had never looked more content. "Thank goodness..."
Euphemia opened her eyes again — and once again found herself wondering, Huh? First it had only been her ears, but now there was something wrong with her eyesight, too. She couldn't see a thing. And she was so cold. She felt like ice.
"How... strange, Suzaku..."
With all the strength she could muster, Euphemia reached out into the darkness.
"I can't... see your face... anymore..."
"—!"
Oh, she didn't like this. It was cold, and so dark. She couldn't see the face of the person who mattered most to her. How sad. Even though she knew he was happy for her — even though he had congratulated her on her success. Even though his admiration should have always given even someone as useless as her courage.
"Euphy!"
Ohh...
There. That warmth — it was Suzaku. Yes, that was definitely Suzaku's hand. The rest of it must have just been her imagination. This was real — Suzaku beside her, clutching her hand.
Vaguely warmed by that, Euphemia smiled again. But, at the same time, she didn't want to keep being dependent on others. It was like she hadn't changed at all. His support made her incredibly happy, but she couldn't just let herself be supported. That same desire for independence was why she'd chosen him as her knight in the first place. And... oh, right. There was one more thing she needed to tell Suzaku.
"Keep..."
"Huh?"
"Keep going... to school... Suzaku..."
The S.A.Z. had already taken up so much of his time. Once the initial stage had been completed, she wanted Suzaku to go back to school. It was probably very important to him, something he needed to do.
"I had to... stop... before I... finished..."
"E, Euphy..."
In the darkness, Suzaku's grip tightened on her hand. It was actually a little painful...
"No, you can still go! I know... We can go to Ashford Academy together! The student council is so much fun. With you there, it'll..."
"Hee, hee... if I... but... Suzaku, you'll have to... do it in — my place..."
Even the pain was fading. And as it did, she realized she'd stopped feeling quite so cold. Actually, Euphy realized, she was very sleepy. Could it having Suzaku's hand in hers have relaxed her that much? She felt so peaceful.
"Euphy— Euphy, no! You can't—"
It's not... so bad. It's thanks to you, Suzaku, that I'm this warm. Thanks to you that I feel the way I do.
Oh...
Forgive me, Sister.
But I really do love6 this person. He's the one I want to be protected by, the one I want to protect. Someday, I hope you'll understand. No: someday, I'll be able to look you in the eye and tell you myself. I'll make sure of it.
This is the person your little sister chose, I'll say.
The person who helped me follow my dreams...
"Suzaku... you know, I'm... so — very glad... I was able to... meet..."
But there she stopped. Robbed of the last of her strength, Euphemia could no longer even move her lips. Her pale hand went limp and slipped through Suzaku's fingers.
"...!!"
His wordless scream pierced the medbay.
